stone profile

As a former stonemason, I set out to create an object in stone that not only functions within a design context, but also shows off traditional stonemasonry. I wanted to create objects in stone with the mindset of a craftsman and the perspective of a designer. The result of my research into my former life as a stonemason is a small series of three profiles in stone. The profiles are lifted directly from my old textbooks from stonemasonry school. I adjusted the scale, proportions and dimensions to create a more deliberate visual harmony. The idea was to carve a profile by hand and cut up the extrusion into multiple pieces using an industrial circular saw. These two steps represent the contrast between craftsmanship and industrial process. These architectural profiles are lifted from the stone facade, where they drown in the visual chaos and are put into our living spaces. A vaguely familiar object, made visible through changing its environment. The pieces function as book stands, desk organizers, trays, paperweights or just as a simple sculpture.
